Isla Magdalena, Chilean Patagonia- Gallery

Chilean Patagonia

Penguins, penguins, and more penguins are the theme of this gallery.  We took the Malinka Ferry from the Tres Puentes Ferry Port in Punta Arenas, Chile to Isla Magdalena to see the Magellanic Penguins roosting.  This island boasts over 65,000 nesting, mating, and waddling pairs.  That’s way over 100,000.  This is a protected area for them and there is a nice walkway running around the island perimeter.   It’s roped off paths and some guides who work there, help to keep the penguins safe.  They inevitably walk along the path with you at times and you need to give the right of way.

It was magical spending the 2 hours to get to the Island, crossing over the Strait of Magellan, and seeing the Island appear in the distance.  Once we arrived we only had about an hour and a half to make the trek around and to be honest it wasn’t enough time.   Sea lions, other birds, and wildlife abound on this island.  It’s a bird-watching paradise really.  We fell in love with the wild penguins and saw how they roosted in little holes in the ground.  Penguins mate for life and while one is watching the eggs/babies, the other is either keeping watch or fishing for food.  There are thousands waddling about, calling out, and hanging around.  We loved every minute of it.  We hope you like the gallery of photos as much as we enjoyed being there!   Don’t forget to check out the blog article with the video at the bottom.  It’s cheesy and fun.
