The temples of Khajuraho are one of the most unique places on this earth let alone India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jain and Hindu temples are over 1000 years old and have sculptures on the facade and inside the sanctuary of sexual acts. No one knows for sure why the temples were made with this theme, however not all the sculptures are sexual in nature, in fact most are simply about life at that time. The temples are most likely not related to the Kama Sutra prose that was written over 1500 years before the temples were built, but then again, there is no real way of telling if they were or were not fashioned because of the script. Most were destroyed by Muslim invaders in the 12th century and many still remain in pristine condition. The uniqueness of these temples are singular. There is no place like this in the world and one of the most interesting place we visited in India with a rich history of both Jain and Hindu beliefs. The temples are dedicated to specific gods in the western complex and it was interesting to see the information plaques that describe the temples and to whom they are dedicated to.
